GIS

Geographic Information System (GIS) is increasingly integrated into archaeological and paleontological studies and Cogstone is in the forefront of this integration.  From the beginning of a project GIS is utilized to collect spatial information, track progress, and coordinate between the client and the sub-contractors.  Sub-meter accurate Trimble units are used in the field to record the precise location of archaeological features, artifact finds, and paleontological resources.  Finalized maps and data summary tables that convey the results of surveys and analyses are quickly generated for project management and report production.

Cogstone has developed an extensive GIS database containing a variety of spatial data layers including archaeological site locations, historic maps, geologic maps, aerial photographs, satellite imagery, digital elevation models, and topographic maps. When a project is initiated, maps containing the above information are quickly generated and serve as part of the background study.

Field work involves mapping archaeologically and paleontologically significant information using Trimble GPS units.  The Trimble unit is a GPS receiver and handheld computer that collects data with subfoot accuracy.  When collecting data in low reception areas or when increased accuracy is needed, Cogstone uses the Tornado Antenna to achieve  high- accuracy mapping and GPS data.  Cogstone also owns two professional rangefinders.  Cogstone’s suite of GPS tools ensures that the highest level of accuracy in data collection is achieved.  All GPS data are then layered with the project specific GIS data and final maps are created.  Cogstone has been complimented many times on the quality and thoroughness of its GIS work.

An example of our GIS capabilities can be seen below.

The GIS Department at Cogstone has experience in GIS, Geospatial Analysis, and Cartography.  Our capabilities include digitizing graphic data, thematic mapping, vector and raster analysis.

Software used for entering, analyzing, and displaying geospatial data includes ESRI ArcGIS.  Cogstone is capable of importing and exporting all types of GIS files, including ArcInfo coverages, ArcInfo export (.e00), and Shapefiles.  Raster data capabilities include TIFF, JPEG, and DEM.

Cogstone has two GIS workstations.  For data input, Cogstone has four Trimble GeoXh units, two Tornado Antennas, and two TruPulse Professional Rangefinders.
